We are just past the mid-point of 2015, and while there have been a few setbacks or battles lost, there are also a far larger number of gains for animals. And while thinking about individual corporate gains, lawsuits, or legislative battles won is critical (I announced big victories this week with Hugo Boss going fur free and General Mills adopting the Five Freedoms), it’s also important to think about the arc of our progress. Today I want to share with you a new infographic that highlights the long-term gains we’ve made in our cause.
Please share this infographic, as a story about The HSUS but also about the progress of our movement, and the fact that so many individuals and groups contributed to these gains. There’s no question in my mind that we are in the midst of a massive cultural, economic, and political shift when it comes to our dealings with animals. You can see it in the gains in so many of the major areas of our work: creating a comprehensive legal framework against cruelty and animal fighting, normalizing the discussion of adoption and spay-and-neuter, ending the era of extreme confinement of farm animals, closing out the killing of marine mammals for commercial slaughter, and ending the era of the use of chimpanzees in research and entertainment. Let’s continue to propel this kind of sweeping change, recognizing that these gains are hard and long-fought, but indeed possible and even probable if we are strategic and focused and capable of making the investments needed.
